A bi-annual vaccination based FMD Control Programme (FMDCP) was launched by theGovernment of India in 2004, initially covering 54 districts in the country to control FMD and to minimize the economic loss due to FMD. This involves six monthly FMD vaccination with an inactivated trivalent FMD (O, A and Asia1) vaccine, of all eligible cattle and buffaloes for protection against FMD. The scheme was progressively expanded to cover the entire country by 2018-19. ICAR-DFMD has been providing all the technical/laboratory anddiagnostic support to the FMD Control Programme (FMDCP) since 2003-04. The institute participate in FMDCP withcrucial contribution in monitoring pre and postvaccinal antibody response for assessment ofindividual and herd immunity. In order to assess the effectiveness of both vaccine and vaccination programme, serum samples before vaccination and 21 to 30 days post vaccination were collected and screened for level of serotype specific structural antibodies by Liquid Phase Blocking ELISA (LPB ELISA) developed by ICAR-DFMD.Under FMDCP, 200 pre and 200 post vaccination samples were collected from each district following a simple random sampling technique. The whole process of sample collection (pre-vaccination and post-vaccination sampling) was repeated again during each round of vaccination through randomized calculator. The reagents and training to conduct post-vaccination seromonitoring was provided by the Central FMD Laboratory, Mukteswar to all the regional and collaborating FMD centres.
Schematic diagram of the timeline of FMDCP coverage across country. Fifty-four (54) districts in which control programme started in 2003-04 are marked red; 167 districts in which the control programme started in 2010-11 are marked green; 110 districts in which control programme started in 2013-14 are marked yellow; 38 districts in which control programme started in 2014-15 are marked brown; all remaining districts in which control programme started in 2017-18 are marked blue.
